Providing Support to the Ozarks

Help for our friends

All SmilesThe Down Syndrome Group of the Ozarks mission is to build a network of support for individuals with Down syndrome and those who love and serve them in Southwest Missouri. This will be achieved by providing support and education on early intervention services, promoting inclusive education, highlighting appropriate medical services, encouraging quality employment opportunities and advocating for community awareness and acceptance. We welcome anyone who is interested in advancing the quality of life for individuals with Down Syndrome such as parents, caregivers, educators, therapist and other professionals.

Graduation

who we are

ThoughtfulWe are a group of dedicated parents, caregivers, and professionals who strive to provide professional programming, services and publications.  It is our goal to become the leading resource of Down syndrome information for new and expectant parents, students, educators and all citizens of Southwest Missouri.

We are interested in building a network of support where information is shared, social opportunities are made available, and supports are provided for individuals with Down syndrome, their parents, caregivers and families. We envision a community of acceptance and inclusion for all citizens with Down syndrome in Southwest Missouri.

We strive to provide opportunities of involvement which will build self-advocacy skills and increase self confidence of individuals with Down syndrome and/or their families. We work hard to raise awareness and funds that enable the organization to meet these goals and aspirations.

What is Down Syndrome?

Down Syndrome is a condition caused by a genetic abnormality where the person is born with an extra chromosome.  It affects approximately one in every 1,000 births, and is one of the leading clinical causes of intellectual disability in the world. Down Syndrome symptoms vary from person to person and can range from mild to severe.  In addition to physical signs, Down Syndrome also can result in delayed physical, mental and social development.

Educational programs, along with a stimulating home environment and good medical care, enable individuals with Down Syndrome to become contributing members of their families and communities.  Visit our page on Down Syndrome for more information.
