DSGO Response to Tropic Thunder
Dear Friends of DSGO,
Hurtful. Unnecessary. Disrespectful. The use of the word ‘retarded’ in casual conversation to call someone or something stupid is that and more to the 6 million people in the United States who have intellectual disabilities, and their family and friends, who fight for acceptance, equality and inclusion every day. With that in mind, we at the Down Syndrome Group of the Ozarks, along with many national disability rights groups, are boycotting the new movie “Tropic Thunder” and we ask you to do the same.
While intended to be a satire on Hollywood actors and producers, the film has scenes and dialogue which is offensive to people with intellectual disabilities. We ask you to help in this campaign by boycotting “Tropic Thunder.” If we can hurt the ticket sales of this film, we will have made a statement to Hollywood that we will not stand for this type of content that is hurtful to people with intellectual disabilities.
Thank you for your support in our continued fight for acceptance and equality.
Sincerely,
The Down Syndrome Group of the Ozarks
